--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, apparently everyone hates Bucchigiri. I'm not about that. Not only
do I think Bucchigiri did very little wrong, but I find it did nearly
everything right. First of, I am a bit of a Hiroko Utsumi enjoyer now. Surprisingly,
I haven't seen Free or Banana Fish, but I really liked SK8. So if it's
more of that, count me in. I think I actually liked Bucchigiri even more
than SK8, which is probably blasphemy to many but I can't just like...
lie.
The Bad
Yeah, we're mixing it up. Bad stuff first. Like everyone else, I agree that Arajin is the obvious downside of the show, but not nearly to the extent that some people take it. I just think he's a little annoying and over the place thematically. What's his deal? For the people who actually finished the show, its pretty obvious. Arajin is a pathetic loser who let a friend down and now he can't even be around him because he's so ashamed and unable to deal with the expectations the friend keeps of him. Instead, he stays cold and pushes him away while pursuing meaningless things like losing his virginity and a girl who literally wants nothing to do with him. Sounds not too bad in theory, but it wasn't that great in execution. That's literally the only drawback for me, Arajin's motives are a little to stretched out, the "comedic" pursuit of Mahoro doesn't make that much sense with the very dramatic confrontation with Matakara that finally occurs at the end.
Honestly, I don't really get people's hate for Arajin when Denji from Chainsaw Man was literally everyone's favourite like less than a few months ago. Denji is actually a much worse character, he literally gets what he wants despite it being a pretty sleazy surface-level wish that is supposed to act as the proxy of his real needs. Arajin doesn't get shit because the plot acknowledges that he is pathetic and his wish is stupid too. Honestly, I don't know how else to put it but that Arajin is a female-gaze creep/loser. Lots of dudes on the very legal websites where I consume anime hate him because even when he's treated like dirt, he keeps chasing Mahoro and is always letting his bros down. Like yeah, these guys do exist, I don't know what to tell you. If his behavior was rewarded with attention from girls, I bet all these guys would be singing a different tune.
P.S. You're all acting like he's the first little bitch in anime.
You know what? I'm wrong. The worst part is Mahoro's whole shtick. Not that she's a massive bitch, I find that funny. But the brother stuff. It's just weird, man...
The Good
Okay, you still hate Arajin. You still hate Mahoro (who I literally don't think she is that bad, outside the incestuous crush stuff...). How can this show be good if two important characters suck? Easy. One word. Matakara. Matakara is literally the best. I don't even want to explain it. But he literally is. He might start out as a bit too perfect and way naive, being a nice guy, a strong fighter, and having so much faith in Arajin. But episode 8 is a real change. Matakara is hit with one bad thing after another, his brother is near death after trying to stop a fight in juvie, he finds out that Arajin's strength is a total fraud, and he's left completely alone. This allows Ichiya to reach into Matakara's deepest fear, that he is nothing and no one will be beside him. That's so depressing... and a great fucking story. Under Ichiya's influence, Matakara fights people left and right, friends and enemies alike, until pretty much every bridge has been burned. When it seems like Matakara is in too deep, Arajin stops him. And Arajin finally undergoes some form of character development, shouting 'I want to help Matakara wake up!' instead of 'I want to lose my virginity!' for once. I don't get how people can't love Matakara, he's an excellent character.
P.S. The best thing to happen to any of us. Be grateful, live your life.
The show also looks great, I'm almost never drawn to modern shows these days because of how they look. Even watching Tasogare Out Focus right now, I am enjoying the story but I am bored to death with the visuals, they cannot be anymore plain. Well, none of that in Bucchigiri! The show has vibrant and awesome looking characters, delinquents with extra flavour. Some of them are almost pushing 2000s emo art style, but I like that. More importantly, the show invents a pseudo-Arabic environment and text style that is prevalent in every location. Palm trees, dome-like roof tops, and Arabic-style scripture on road signs and temple stones. It looks super original and awesome. The name Arajin is basically a mildly altered version of Aladdin as the whole story is very directly inspired by the tales of 1001 Nights. I am obsessed.
P.S. The courtyard with the low fountain is also an excellent staple.
The Rest
The show has an excellent cast, most of the characters are essential for the narrative and there is basically no filler. The beach episode is great, because there is no beach episode. It's a bunch of half naked dude's beating the shit out of each other in a tent.
P.S. That's right, blue lesbian, red lesbian. We are so back.
Senya is a nice guy who makes gay innuendo statements by accident and wants to fight. A gentle giant but if he was a more strict moral compass to Arajin, I think that would have made the story more interesting and also it would be a good transition to Arajin's evolution.
P.S. Wait til you see the slutty tassels.
Ichiya is also interesting, the darker mentor figure to Senya, his role makes sense. But maybe it's his late introduction into the show or something else, but he somehow feels incomplete.
P.S. ♬ Two bros... chilling in the bathhouse where Matakara lives... five feet apart cuz they're not gay. ♬
Zabu is a much better friend than Arajin. I think that's obvious on purpose, because we're not always smart enough to chose the thing that is actually better not just for us, but everyone around us. This whole show is about choosing to chase the wrong thing. The thing that will hurt you. The thing that doesn't make any sense. The thing you can't ever get. Zabu is a bit a part of that too, especially in his final showdown with Matakara which he has no chance of winning. Komao's just cute. He kind of looks like Anthony Kiedis in Point Break. I don't like Kiedis but that is a look.
P.S. You just wanna see your best friend be himself again (i.e. choosing violence).
Outa and Marito are a great pair, I'm always a sucker for not antagonists, not friends to the main character. Just some shady guys. Also their calm and reasonable guy coupled with eccentric psychopath dynamic is pleasant. SK8 also had this kind of thing going, where every character had some kind of ally-counterpart. I think it works.
P.S. Let's go! A nose that isn't like the others... we were deprived too long.
Jabashiri and Hagure are a good pair too but Hagure could use a little more development as his main scene is mostly made up of him getting his ass beat. Though it does spark a lot of rage in Jaba who then fights the newly changed Matakara. Also, I guess Hagure is like the lore-nerd of Siguma which is pretty funny, Die-hard friendships are always great, keep it up.
P.S. Babygirl you are strange and off-putting.
Mahoro is a weirdo. She is super mean. But I genuinely did not find her that unlikable. At least she had her own ground to stand on, unlike many anime characters that happen to be girls. Especially in a fighting anime.
P.S. Don't let nerds do gang warfare, they are absolutely going to the suck the fun out of it and bring a knife.
Shindo is a pretty mediocre villain, I guess because he is a false villain. Still, he actually has some funny moments.
The Miss Jasmine gag was not that funny but I love cats so I don't really care. This show gets the Highest Recommendation Badge and I think it is totally misjudged by most.
The Score
Story: A. Stronger in the second half, the plot and themes are super satisfying. I even liked the comedy aspects.
Characters: A+. If literally every character beside Matakara sucked, I would still give this an A. But the entire cast is likeable or at least interesting to me.
Style: A+. The show looks amazing! The designs, the settings! All of it is awesome.
Pacing: A. It was well-paced, I wasn't ever bored or confused or anything. It could have cut back on some gags but nothing drastic.
Animation: A. There weren't any fight scenes that totally blew me away but most of them were very good.
Music: A-. I really liked the ending theme, I'm more neutral on the opening. The visuals that come with the music are phenomenal though.
Final Score: A. This show fucking rocks. Stop flaming, haterz!1!!

I like to give scores, but I also like to give recommendations. But I've got a really specific way of judging when to recommend something or not, so here's a little guide about it:
Highest Recommendation Badge - These are the best shows I have ever seen. Everyone should watch them and I will recommend them willy-nilly.
Strong Recommendation Badge - I will recommend these show to most people. These shows are often classics that should be watched even though I myself might not be a huge fan of.
Mild Recommendation Badge - I would only recommend these shows to serious anime fans, serious genre enthusiasts, or those who have nothing better to do. These shows aren't bad but they are not for everyone.
No Recommendation Badge - I don't feel anything about this show and would not recommend it or recommend not watching it.
Recommendation To Ignore Badge - I do not recommend these shows but it would be fine for people to watch it and be disappointed themselves.
Recommendation To Forget Badges- This show is so fucking bad I think no one should see it, in fact, I wish I could erase it from my memories.
And that's all.

╔⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤❀⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤⏤╗
So, I used to be a real strict follower of the however much out of 10 kind of scoring system before. But I feel like it's time for a change, a return to the basics... that I never really knew because I've never been to an American school. Whatever, let's pretend. Anyway, here's my scoring system guide, with as little confusing moments as possible:
The Areas
Story: Includes the general plot and core of the story. Themes and their impact are very important to how much I enjoy a show.
[A+] This show has a perfect story that has a strong theme that is reflected in the narrative.
[A] If not for 1 thing, this show would have the perfect story.
[A- ] If not for 2 or 3 things, this show would have the perfect story.
[B] This show is pretty good, but not amazing.
[C] This show is fine.
[D] This show is mediocre.
[E] This show is painfully mediocre or boring.
[F] Somehow, this show is so bad, there is nothing that can be done to salvage it.
Characters: How well-thought the characters are, they really don't have to relatable or likeable. Just have to interest me throughout the show and overcome challenges, be flawed, and change.
[A+] This show has an excellent cast who are flawed and overcome issues and grow. This show also has great villains who have understandable motivations.
[A] This show has mostly good characters with a few that are under-developed or poorly developed.
[A- ] This show has a 1 or 2 stand-out characters that carry the show.
[B] This show has mostly good characters but they lack development to bring them to their full potential.
[C] This show's characters are just fine, but not special.
[D] This show has average characters who really lack depth.
[E] This show has painfully mediocre or boring characters.
[F] This show has no good characterization at all.
Style: The look and appeal of the show. I really care about things like consistent styles, colours, and simply how cool everything looks.
[A+] This show has a very unique style, the characters are consistent and fit into their environment. I would kill for looks from this show.
[A] This show has a number of excellent character designs. Some characters or environments could use more creativity.
[A- ] There are 1 or 2 stand-out designs or characters in this show.
[B] This show looks very nice but lacks a special visual look.
[C] This show looks very average but is still appealing.
[D] This show is average and is not appealing.
[E] This show is visually boring.
[F] This show is ugly.
Pacing: Talks about the development of the show and characters, whether it is rushed, has too much filler, or is dragging on and on.
[A+] The pacing fits the narrative perfectly. It combines dramatic and light-hearted moments naturally. I was not bored or distracted during this show.
[A] The show's pace is mostly perfect, with one or two scenes that do not work with the general pace.
[A- ] The show's pace is usually good, but there is either filler or poorly written scenes that take away from the good parts.
[B] Half the pacing is good, and half is not.
[C] The pacing is consistent but not satisfying, because it either feels rushed or dragging.
[D] The show's pacing makes no sense and the scenes feel strange but is still watchable.
[E] The show is obviously poorly put-together.
[F] The show is painful to watch.
Animation: Will be judged in relation to the studio, or the budget, or even the genre.
[A+] Perfect animation befitting the genre or budget of the production.
[A] Outside of a few minor issues, the animation is excellent.
[A- ] The animation may lack but is compensated through style or story.
[B] The animation is good and fits the genre but is not special.
[C] The animation is acceptable but is not special.
[D] The animation is minimal or poor, but is still watchable.
[E] The animation is poor and is nearly unwatchable.
[F] The animation is terrible.
Music: Mostly concerned with the ending and opening but also talks about whether the music is fitting to the story or not.
[A+] The OP/ED are excellent and the music in the show is fitting and atmospheric. I listen to the OP/ED in my spare time.
[A] The OP/ED is good and most of the show music is fitting. I listen to the OP or the ED in my spare time.
[A- ]The OP/ED is good but not memorable, the show music is fitting most of the time. I may listen to the OP/ED in my spare time.
[B] The OP/ED is good but very forgettable, the show music is acceptable. I don't listen to the OP/ED in my spare time.
[C] The OP/ED is fine, the show music is mildly distracting. I don't listen to the OP/ED in my spare time.
[D] The OP/ED is not very good and the show music is very poor. I don't listen to the OP/ED in my spare time.
[E] All the music in the show is poor.
[F] The music in the show is of very poor quality, is not possible to listen to, or completely unfitting.
Final Score: Finally, we combine all the previous scores into one final decision!
So there it is, a guide to my convoluted scoring system. Sometimes the scores I give won't reflect these comments 100% but this is a general way in which I try to categorize how I feel about the shows I watch.

Bus Gamer Anime Review: Quick Cash, Even Faster Episodes.
Title: Bus Gamer
Episodes: 3
Genres: Action, Drama, Mystery
Studio: Anpro
Year: 2008
Source: Manga
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Good
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bus Gamer does look good. The character's have unique styles and appearances that flow well together and the world they inhabit. I always love a style you can point to and immediately find the party responsible. Kazuya Minekura's mangas are fantastic and a pleasure to look at. There were also a number of funny moments due to the clashes in the personalities of the main trio. Toki Mishiba, Nobuto Nakajo, & Kazuo Saito are more different than similar and seemingly incompatible. However tentative their teamwork is, it takes them far and I am a sucker for a team of clashing personalities unwilling to work together.
P.S. I love flip-phones.
My least favorite character is probably Toki, who's not actually like, bad or anything. He's just pretty boring even though he is given a mysterious and/or tragic back story. It doesn't really bring much.
P.S. Best dressed, hands down. Love a good necklace.
Nakajo is fun because he has some dumb one-liners and talks a lot of shit. He also is probably the best dressed.
P.S. She's a filthy gamer on the side too. Respect.
The only other prevalent character is Keiko Ichinomiya who is not part of the games but is instead a detective invested in the mysterious deaths of many young guys that we know are the result of the games. She's ignored by her boss and ends up demoted to the archive department after carrying a suspect's gun around in her bag while getting drunk at a beer garden.
P.S. Idiot. Why does be need one billion yen and why does he carry a picture of a nun?
Saito is the most dynamic character and a person I feel is the most relevant to the viewer. He is a total novice to the crime world and sticks out like a sore thumb. He lacks the coolness of Toki or the bravado of Nakajo. He has some funny moments but some of them are also a little overbearing, he's still the character I found most enjoyable. The gun gag was probably the best bit but it could have been given a more subtlety to really highlight the absurd elements of the show.
The Bad
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The overarching plot is pretty weak. The games of three vs. three have no unique rules to make the story tense or intriguing. The goal lies in either protecting the 'home base' and not letting the other team get a CD full of secret information or the reverse. In a later match the rules are suddenly changed and both teams have CDs and have to fight to keep their own disc and steal the other from the enemy. In the end it leads to just boring fist or knife fights with no parameters to follow to make the tension higher. The only time the show tries to up the ante is when they have to do battle in a crowded public place but it's too little too late.
The Rest
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bus Gamer goes by fast, it feels like it's gonna reveal a whole lot more but before you know it you get those final frames of the three in their usual jobs. A traffic cop, a bar tender, and a store clerk. Still, what it was able to get done was well executed and therefore deserves a mild recommendation badge.
P.S. It does look cool. It does.
The Score
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Story: C. The death and money games narrative is not particularly interesting and here it feels incredibly rushed.
Characters: C. While the archetypes are interesting, the three episodes don't really let you make a connection with any of the characters.
Style: A. Excellent style. The outfits, character details, and colour palettes are outstanding. I also liked a few of the settings.
Pacing: C. Very fast, but it's better than dragging on with no purpose.
Animation: C. The animation is not bad but the action scenes are less than exciting.
Music: B. Decent openings but nothing special. A few interesting instrumentals during the action sequences. The ending theme really outshone the opening theme.
Final Score: C. A quick watch with little to get immersed into but a fun exercise n style.
